Ian was a little startled when Eric broke the silence -- asking the question he knew was bound to pop up at some point. He hesitated for only a second. "Yeah..." The medic's voice trailed off and he put his floor-wiping job on the back of his mind, with thoughts about his life at home filling up the front. He figured the Scout wasn't interested in hearing every detail of his story, so he decided to sum it up. "Long story short?" He started again, scrubbing harder at a stubborn spot on the floor. "It was either this... or med school again."
In truth, he would have been perfectly fine with furthering his education. He would have preferred it, actually. The only thing stopping him was his strict parents, and his limited patience with them.

"You picked this over med school? Wow, I'm sorry but dude you must have been dropped on your head or something. This place is shit." She gestured at the worn out wall and water damaged ceilings. Eric had already almost completely forgotten about cleaning the floor and was rocking back and forth on her heels, making gestures with the bloody rag as she continued, "I mean, going to school is never fun, and you don't get paid obscene amounts of cash, but personally I think it sure as fuck beats, well, getting the fuck beat out of you for a living."

Ian stopped scrubbing and turned towards Eric as she chastised him. It took a second for the harsh words to sink in. You know, maybe she was right. Maybe he was crazy for picking a place like this over his home. Over his studies. But he just... this was the only way he saw where he could please both himself and his parents -- moreso them, with the large paycheck. That outcome was all he needed to convince him to give TF Industries a shot.
He was silent through the whole thing, feeling his temperature rise as the girl spoke. Once she finished, his eyes met the floor again and he resumed cleaning. "Well--" He started, a sting in his words. "If I'm going to get beat up regardless... I might as well be getting paid for it." He was telling the truth, even though the beatings at home were only metaphorical.

Eric opened her mouth to reply even before he was done talking, but paused when he was finished. Well, shit, that last part kind of made her regret bringing this up. She knelt back down on one knee and began wiping up the floor again. "Uh, I suppose that's a good point." She replied after a few moments. "So, got any like pets or anything back home?" Awkwardly change the subject. That'll fix everything.

Ian was silent for a moment. "Yeah. A dog. I left her at home, but they'll take care of her." He replied softly, 'they' referring to his parents. The medic's response was short, with his thoughts still lingering on his life and his choices.
But, like Eric, he also wanted to get his mind off of these things. "So, um... if this place is so bad, how did you end up here?" Since the girl seemed like she wouldn't be here unless for a very good reason, he was interested in her story. Then, his politeness kicked in. "I mean... if you don't mind me asking." He could see the end of his side of the blood trail not too far off. Almost done.

"Well," she leaned back once again on heels, completely forgetting about cleaning. "My parents are sort of extremely obnoxious. Er, wait no, my mom is, my dads literally never home so I wouldn't even know. But yeah, my moms just really obnoxious, and this was the first job I got outta collage so I took it just to get away from her. Honestly I don't like it that much, but it's not all bad. Beating the shit outta people is pretty fun, and again, the money is a pretty big perk." Eric twirled the rag around in her hand and frowned slightly, "Even if I did ever wanna quit this job, I'm not even sure what I'd do after I left." Not to mention, it was also nice that her parents didn't know exactly where she worked, which made visits nearly impossible.

Ian wiped up the last of the blood while listening to her story. He stood up and turned around, sighing with relief at his side being done. "Well then, I guess we both have something in common... at least with our parents." A small smile formed on his face when he realized he wasn't exactly alone here. It got a little wider when he noticed the girl still hadn't finished cleaning up her half of the hallway. Then, pointing to the trail, it turned into a laugh. "You want me to get the rest of that?"

"Oh, right that." Eric rubbed her neck and chuckled, a, bit embarrassed not to be done yet. "Heh, yeah sure, if you want. There's not a lot left." She went back to kneeling and continued scrubbing herself. "You know, with as little as people even walk around this base, I doubt they would have even noticed this. And if they did, they probably wouldn't care," she commented.

Regardless of how little of the mess was left, Ian walked over and started helping. The scout did have a point, even though tidying up like this felt more like a habit than anything these days. "...Honestly? This was probably more for me than anyone else." He responded, figuring that walking out of the medical ward every day and seeing blood stained into the floor would have driven him crazy. ...That, and what kind of medic doesn't try to keep their work area clean?
"Besides, are you positive we, uh, even have a team in here with us?" It was kind of worrying the boy a bit, seeing as Eric was still the only contact he'd had since coming to BLU. He sincerely hoped more people would turn up sometime soon.

Eri Eric rolled her eyes, but a slight smile was on her lips. "/Yes/ we have a team. They're all around here somewhere. Fact, Darren, the hardhat, he's probably out in the garage. You should meet him, he's real nice. Then there's Barv, our heavy, he's a huge dick so don't go out of your way looking for him," she paused for a moment, then added: "Fact, the rest of the teams really unpleasent aside from him. Including myself, to be honest." Eric was standing now, stretching her arms abover her head as she finished speaking.

Ian finished wiping up whatever was left of the blood and stood up beside her. It was reassuring to know she'd at least seen people around... recently, even. However, he wasn't really sure how to react to almost all of them being abrasive. "...Oh." Taking the other cloth from Eric's hand, he started walking back to the ward to put them away. Then he stopped for a second and spoke again. "But uh, for what it's worth... you don't seem that bad." He continued walking. "...At all, really."

She handed him the rag and began following behind, and slowed when he stopped. Eric couldn't help but laugh at his comment. "Heh, thanks. Always gotta be nice to medics, y'know? Always good to be on the doctors side when you get the shit beat out you." She lingered behind the medic as he went ahead and added more quietly, "Sides, it's kinda nice having someone younger around too."

Ian hadn't heard her last comment as he reached the ward. He quickly put the bloody rags in a bin and... oh look, the textbooks on his desk were calling to him again. The medic groaned slightly -- he still didn't feel like studying things today. To try and rid himself of the guilt that was slowly chipping away at him, he took the books from the desk and shoved them into one of the drawers. Out of sight, out of mind, right...? He'll make up the time at some point. Definitely.

Eric blinked and turned back to Ian, noticing he was walking ahead she quickened her pace to catch up. She stepped back into the Ward and loitered by the doorway, watching Ian out of the corner of her eye. At this point, she really didn't need anything from the medic, she could leave at any time. Leave and go do what though? Sit around in her room and read? She'd that all day for the last three days. There must be something more interesting to do... "Hey, Ian, do you know how to cook?" Eric asked suddenly.

Dave's question took the medic by surprise -- he hadn't expected to be followed back into the ward. He turned around, laughing nervously. "I never really had to learn; I mean, when I was back at home..." He ruffled his own hair and, for a second, he started to miss his mom's cooking. "...Sorry."
Speaking of food, John realized he hadn't eaten anything at all today. It wasn't too uncommon for him to just... forget to eat, but it was never a good thing. Trying to keep his empty stomach from growling embarrassingly loud, he kept the conversation going. "Why? You need something...?"
