Leaving the basement caused the pain to go away substantially. The suffocating and horrendous air of the basement was definitely getting to them all. Every occurrence was out of place and at this point, all Gordon wanted to do was leave it be for tonight. That was enough paranormal activity. He slumped down onto the couch.

Zacharie made his way very quickly up the stairs, shutting the door to the basement behind him after he was sure everyone else was out. He even locked it to be completely sure. After that he sunk into a nearby chair, looking almost disheveled as he pulled his cigarettes out of his ruined coat. He put one between his lips, but as soon as he picked up his lighter he suddenly lost the desire to light up. No, no fire right now, please and thank you.
“What on God’s green Earth-” He said with a slightly exasperated tone. “-just happened.” It really wasn’t much of a question, because no one had the answer. Things just happened so quickly, like falling dominoes. Zacharie expected an evening of sitting in the basement and rolling his eyes at silly attempts to connect with a ghost. But what he got instead was a situation that became very real, very quickly. He didn’t admit it out loud, but he was glad that no one was injured.

Eunice was coughing and sputtering from the basement. "Wh-what happened? Somethin' catch fire?"

Fran glanced over at the engineer, the look on her face still conveying her unease. "Well...yes actually. I'm just not really sure 'how' though." She gestured toward the singed coat in Zacharie's arms. Leaning her head back, mind racing with unanswered questions, she began to think out loud. "The candles were all the way across the room. There had to been something we just didn't see." She shot an accusatory look at Zacharie. "You didn't do anything stupid like stuff a lit cigarette in your pocket and forget about it, right?"

“What?” He snapped out of his daze and looked at Fran with an offended expression. “Excusez-moi, but I would never do something so stupid!” The spy waved his closed lighter as he spoke. “The only time I used this during the whole disaster you called an experiment is to light the candles!”

"But you still had the lighter with you the whole time, didn't you?" Fran met his outrage with an even tone. "Perhaps you...it lit itself somehow? You...I don't know, bumped it or something in just the exact right way to cause a spark?" Fran tapped her feet on the ground in agitation as she spoke. None of this was adding up. She was really just grasping at straws here, partly because she was still hoping to be as rational about this as possible and partially because if she convinced herself there was a ghost in the base the chances of her ever getting a good night's sleep again would plummet.

Gordon had buried his face in his hands from exhaustion and slight distress after what had happened. He groaned lightly as he heard the argument between Fran and Zacharie but had a bit of an unamused look on his face. He understood the fact that they had wanted to provide rational arguments to explain the phenomenon..... Since the idea of a ghost was not inviting for any of them at all. But at this point Gordon just wanted to leave it be and kept quiet. "We're all just tired and a bit distressed from what happened....." Gordon muttered very very quietly. He rubbed his temples in irritation.
Just what on earth could be going on in the base?

"Alright you two, cut it out;" Eunice intervened, "Playin' th' blame game won't change th' fact that th' basement's on fire... we need t' git it put out."

"The lid was closed." He said with a very unamused tone, flipping the lighter open with a turn of his wrist. "See? You need to actually-" Zacharie flicked the flint wheel on the lighter with his thumb with ease. "Make some deliberate motion to light anything." With a similar motion he closed the lighter, the tiny flame going out as soon as it shut.
"Listen. I don't know what caused it, or that writing on the wall, but someone is trying to get to us." He growled, putting the lighter back in his ruined coat. "Maybe one of those BLUs, trying to be funny or something."

"I ain't no believer in th' superstition n' whatnot... but it's purdy obvious what's happened here," Eunice said, "We've got ourselves a ghost." The engineer folder her arms, "don't try denyin' it."

Fran was about to throw another retort Zacharie's way, but she paused and looked to Eunice instead. "I thought you didn't believe in ghosts! Or at least you made it sound like you didn't? I mean just think about it, do you really think any of the BLUs wouldn't try something like this? And the fire," She glared at the spy again, "could have easily been an accident. The writing...well, someone obviously put that there. I don't know who or why but..." Her words grew more intense as she spoke until she was nearly yelling. Taking a deep breath, she began again. "I-I just wanted to do some little tests that all. I didn't want to actually find a ghost. I wanted to disprove all of this more then anything." Defeated, she rested her chin on her hands. "Guess it's getting a bit late for that."

"Calm down." Gordon said while looking up, his right hand still on his temple. "Getting worked up over this won't do you any good. Whatever happens..... happens. That was what I was going by. While I'm not sure myself about what could be happening here..... We can safely say it's abnormal."

Zacharie had nothing to add; he just laced his fingers in his lap and looked at the rest of his team mates with a mixture of annoyance and frustration. It was preposterous. Ghosts. They barely used that stupid Ouija board for a minute before things began to fly off the handle. He needed to see better evidence than that, despite the fact his coat was randomly set aflame for no real reason. He was probably forcing himself to disbelieve it. What else could he do?

"I don't. But this evidence is awful hard t' ignore." Eunice replied, "either way, th' basement's on fire. We need t' put it out."
